Best Tripods & Gimbals for Filming Videos

Slider, tripods, and gimbals. Oh my! To increase the production value of whatever you're filming, either make the footage more stable (with tripods and monopods) or add more movement (with a slider or gimbal). Here are the ones we use.

Tripods & Monopods

Switchpod Handheld Tripod

SwitchPod works with any camera, from a phone to a DSLR, and simplifies video making.

Switch between handheld and tripod modes (and back again) in seconds.

SwitchPod is lightweight, compact, and nearly indestructible. Oh, and I co-invented it too. :)

Peak Design Travel Tripod

I’ve travelled with a lot of different tripods for years now, and this is the most compact and feature heavy tripod out there. It is pricey, but you get a quality product at the end of that investment.

And it is SO small that you’ll be able to pack it where you normally put a water bottle. Definitely one of my favorite purchases of late. I have the aluminum version because it is quite a bit cheaper than the carbon fiber version.

Manfrotto 055 Tripod Legs

Our favorite set of legs. These are easy to use, come with a level bubble and can take a beating. While these can come in carbon fiber, we opt for the aluminum and prefer to take a travel tripod when weight truly matters.

Manfrotto 502HD Tripod Head

The 502HD is da best. If you are only using your tripod for locked down shots, a cheaper option might suit your needs better. However, if you are implementing pans and tilts, the fluid motion of the 502HD is unmatched for the price.

Manfrotto 500 Monopod

The monopod is great when you are looking for the stability of a tripod but need the mobility of a shoulder rig. The legs extend effortlessly and even boast three mini retractable feet, which can hold the monopod upright so you don't have to.

Shoulder Rigs

CowboyStudio Shoulder Support Pad

The CowboyStudio shoulder rig is as simple (and cheap) as it gets. But if you are looking for a stable, mobile support for run and gun situations it is hard to overlook.

Motorized Gimbals

DJI Ronin-S

This is the best gimbal on the market. If you want to get smooth shots, throw your camera on top of this and it will do the job.

Its motors are very strong and the setup is quick. The DJI Ronin-S is a slick bit of engineering.
