Canon Lenses I Use & Recommend

Usually forgotten when compared to the fancy new cameras that come out each year, a lens has a major impact on the quality of the image you record. Also, they don't lose their financial value nearly as much as cameras do, so invest in some quality glass is an investment you can always recoup later if you need to. Here are the lenses we use to film our videos.

Canon EF 50mm f1.4

This was the first lens I bought. Often called the "nifty fifty", this is a great all-around lens. I only sold it to upgrade to the f1.2 version. If you only buy one decent lens, this should be it.

Canon EF 50mm f1.2

An upgrade to the nifty fifty above, this is the person medium length lens. Not too wide, not too zoomed in. This is my most used lens when filming using a tripod and it has a great focus ring.

Canon EF 40mm f2.8 “Pancake”

This lens is so tiny you can barely tell it is there. It autofocuses fast and is a great focal length for cropped sensor cameras too.

Canon EF 24-105mm f4.0

When I am filming handheld or documentary style, with my C100 or 5D, this is the lens I'm almost always using. The image stabilization on it is great and you can film wide or really zoomed in without changing lenses. I love this thing.

Giotto's Dust-Removal Tool

Whenever there is dust on my lenses, I use this "puffer" to blow it away. Really inexpensive and much better than remove dust with your finger or by blowing on the lens like it is an old NES cartridge of Excitebike that won't play.

Lens Pen NLP-1

Like the air blowing tool above, I use this when there are smudges on the glass part of lens or something that won't blow away. All we are is dust on a lens.
