Best Video & Filmmaking Accessories

These aren't the sexy or shiny pieces of gear, but without them (especially memory cards) you won't be filming anything. Invest in extras of this stuff too. You don't want to run out of batteries on a shoot. Don't be that person.

SanDisk 32GB Memory Card

I get a lot of emails asking me what SD card I like to use. My recommendations obviously change each year, but this is currently the one. Class 10. Get UHS-3 to record 4K.

Pelican 0915 Memory Card Case

At any given moment I may be carrying up to 20 SD cards. That would get messy real quick if i didn't have a good case. This is a good case. Although not recommended, I reckon you could throw this like an Aaron Rodgers Hail Mary and not break it.

SmallHD FOCUS 1080p OLED Monitor

SmallHD makes premium monitors for the mobile video maker. I mount one of these to my C200 and use it as a bigger monitor without all of the HUD controls visible so I can just focus on the image I’m capturing.

Atomos Shinobi 4K HDR Monitor

This is the best looking monitor on the market that I’ve tested. The 5” touchscreen is HDR, so you can see the brightest highlights and the darkest shadows really well to know what is clipping.

Powerex Rechargeable AA Batteries

Batteries. Many pieces of equipment need AAs to run. You could buy a 20 pack once a month at the grocery store but that is going to get expensive and why not be a little more friendly to the environment?

Savage Paper

Looking to have multiple backgrounds in the same place? Savage background paper is it. Get it in green for keying work.

Impact Triple Hook

Sturdy and made from metal, the Impact Triple Hook is the easiest way to mount paper rolls for studio backgrounds.

Impact Varidrive & Chain

Built to go hand in hand with the Impact Triple Hook the Varidrive adjusts to the size of your paper roll and allows you to lower and retract the paper with ease.

Spring Clips

I leave 5 to 6 of these in the studio. I use them for everything from weighing down the paper rolls, hanging backdrops, and adjusting flags and scrims.

Gaffer Tape

I mainly use gaffer tape for tape cords and cables to the ground as a safety measure, but it comes really handy to just have a lot of it. I also make sure to throw it in my bag when I head out for a client video shoot.

ikan Elite Teleprompter Kit

I love the idea of integrating one piece of equipment with another. This iKan teleprompter allows me to use my iPad as the brains of the setup. Doing this allows me to load scripts easily since my iPad and computer are synced via Dropbox.

Red Bungie Ties

You can never have enough of these. I use these to tie up cords and cables to keep things organized. Buy more than you think you’ll need. :)

X-Rite ColorChecker Video

As always, the more you do in production, the better off you are going to be in post. Add the X-Rite ColorChecker into your recording process to ensure your colors are spot on in post.
